80s Movies : Movie of the Week
After losing his job as a hot shot stock trader Jack Casey (Keven Bacon) joins the colorful crowd of couriers at the Quicksilver bicycle messenger service. Jack’s confidence grows as he races Larry Fishburn down the steep San Francisco streets, tangles with a Gypsy drug dealer and falls for the tough talking female messenger Terri played by an 80s favorite Jami Gertz (Lost Boys, Less then Zero). If you didn’t get enough bicycle ballet in the movie Rad then you are sure to enjoy the gratuitous 80s bike dancing in Quicksilver. This movie is entertaining eighties fare with a predictable happy ending. Will Jack regain his confidence and return to the trading floor? Will Jack dump his superficial materialistic girlfriend for the spunky streetwise Terri? Will that no good Gypsy drug dealer get away with murder?

Eighties pro-wrester Rowdy Roddy Piper stars in this John Carpenter Horror/Action movie from 1988. Roddy Piper is a construction worker who drifts into the city and finds special sunglasses that allow him to see whats really going on around him. Creepy aliens are revealed behind their human disguises and the propaganda messages in the media around him reveal their true message to obey, consume and not think. Roddy aligns himself with the underground to take on the invaders that have infiltrated every aspect of American life. An interesting melding of consumer culture criticism with aliens, fist fights, lots of guns and a modest budget.

When Dracula rises from the dead with a plan to take over the world with the help of other famous monsters (Frankenstien’s Monster, The Wolfman, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Mummy) a group of horror movie obsessed kids who call themselves The Monster Squad must spring to action to stop the plot. This 1987 horror/comedy film is scattered with thrills and and the kind of offbeat teen humor mad magazine readers would appreciate including lots of snappy one-liners from the group of monster hunting kids. This movie was rated PG-13 and is probably not suited to young kids because of mature themes and some language but older kids will appreciate not being talked down to and there is lots for grown up kids to enjoy here too.

The Decline of Western Civilization Part 1 is a behind the scenes look at the west coast punk rock/new wave scene in it’s early days at the beginning of the eighties. Many classic Los Angeles punk rock bands are featured including Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, Fear, X and Germs with interviews with punks such as Darby Crash, Lorna Doom, John Doe and Exene Cervenka. Attitudes range from political to funny to just plain rowdy and nihilistic from these punk rock pioneers building their scene long before it became just another look that you can buy at the mall!

It’s not long before things are blowing up and Schwarzenegger is dishing out his own deadly justice. As the tag line says His Trigger Has All the Answers!

Thug: For what?
Arnie: Impersonating a human being!
Monique: The only way you’ll ever end up lying next to me, Max, is if we’re run down by the same car.

This cheeseball adventure/romantic comedy from 1988 may not have become a recognized classic but it’s still a fun flashback to the lighthearted side of the eighties with good vibes all around. Cyndi Lauper and Jeff Goldblum play two psychics hired by Peter Falk to find his long lost son in a foreign country. When they get there they discover he’s really hired them to help find a hidden temple in the mountains where all the psychic energy in the world comes from.
Steve Buscemi makes an appearance in his typically genius smarmy way.
